While domestic consumption locally increased by 4% in the first half of the year, production contracted by about 2%, so that Romania slipped back into the importer zone, after a very fragile balance reached in 2024.
Black Sea gas is now credited with the ability to transform Romania into a regional exporter, but Transgaz estimates contradict this optimistic discourse. Romania will need imports of 3-5 billion cubic meters, but its regional role is given by the infrastructure already in place, says Ion Sterian, CEO of Transgaz, the absolute performer of the BVB since the beginning of the year. “I have always said that we will need imports, of 3-5 billion cubic meters per year, even with Black Sea gas. We have a decline onshore and we have a decline in the offshore production that we have now. On the other hand, there are energy production projects that are close to completion and need gas, the expansion of gas networks continues, new consumers are connected, Azomureş has resumed activity. Demand will increase,” explains Ion Sterian, head of Transgaz.
“But we have the infrastructure, and that will transform Romania into a hub,” Sterian says.
SNTGN Transgaz SA shares have increased by approx. 69% in the last year, attracting increasing interest from investors. Since the beginning of 2025, Transgaz shares have appreciated by approx. 76%.
